“The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines [ONLINE] is a 5-week, 6-module online learning program with the support of a trainer available throughout this period. It is offered exclusively in English.

Course modules must be followed in order, but learners are free to complete the modules at their own pace during this 5-week period.

The course content takes approximately 30 hours in total to complete, plus revision time.

During your training, you will be required to conduct mandatory tastings; a list of references will be provided: you can either source them yourself or order your tasting kit from us (+€160).

The WSET Level 2 Award in Wines concludes with a one-hour exam in the form of a 50-question multiple-choice questionnaire. The exam must be taken in person at the Butler Academy.

In accordance with France Compétences guidelines, WSET Level 2 in Wines training courses are no longer eligible for CPF funding as of 2023.

Module 1. Understanding environmental factors and various viticultural practices, and recognizing their influence on the style and quality of wines.

  • Identifying the contribution of each part of a grape during winemaking.
  • Identifying the needs of the vine to produce grapes.
  • Identifying the main stages of grape formation and ripening.
  • Describing the evolution of components, aromas, and flavors of a grape as it ripens.
  • Describing the influence of environmental factors in the vineyard on grape ripeness and quality.
  • Describing the influence of grape ripeness on the style and quality of wines.
  • Identifying different viticultural practices.
  • Explaining the main labeling terms related to origin and legislation.
  • Explaining labeling terms related to vine age and various viticultural practices.

Module 2. Understanding the influence of winemaking and bottle aging on the style and quality of wines.

  • Listing the main stages of the alcoholic fermentation process.
  • Listing the main stages of the winemaking processes used for red, rosé, and white wines.
  • Explaining the influence of winemaking options on the style and quality of wines.
  • Identifying the key changes occurring during a wine’s bottle aging.

Module 3. Understanding the influence of environmental factors, viticultural practices, winemaking, and bottle aging on the style and quality of wines made from the principal grape varieties.

  • Identifying the characteristics of the principal grape varieties.
  • Explaining the influence of environmental factors and various viticultural practices on the characteristics of the principal grape varieties.

Module 5. Understanding the influence of the production process on the style of sparkling and fortified wines.

  • Identifying the principal grape varieties used for the production of the main styles of sparkling wines.
  • Listing the main stages of the winemaking processes used for the production of sparkling and fortified wines.
  • Listing the main GIs associated with sparkling and fortified wines.
  • Describing the style of specified sparkling and fortified wines.
  • Explaining labeling terms indicating the style and quality associated with sparkling and fortified wines.

Module 6. Understanding the basic principles and practices related to wine storage and service, as well as food and wine pairing.

  • Identifying the ideal conditions and methods for wine storage.
  • Indicating the recommended service temperature according to the type and style of wine.
  • Describing the correct methods for opening and serving wine.
  • Explaining how the most common faults affect the aromas and flavors of a wine.
  • Identifying the key interactions between food and wine.

PREREQUISITES

  • Holding the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines or possessing an equivalent level of knowledge optional but recommended

  • Being of legal drinkigng age (18+).

Certification validation

The exam must be taken in person at the training center. No exam will be held remotely.

Upon registration, you will be able to choose an exam date from our available in-person sessions.

  • Multiple-choice exam: 50 questions in 1 hour
  • A score of 55% is required to pass and obtain the diploma.

Exam papers are sent to and marked in London.

Results and your diploma are sent digitally at least 4 weeks later.

Candidates who do not pass the exam have the opportunity to retake it during a subsequent session, with an additional registration fee.

SCOPE

Successful candidates will be able to describe and compare wine styles produced from key local and international grape varieties, read and understand labels from the world’s major wine-growing regions, and provide basic advice on wine selection and service.

Furthermore, candidates will understand the principles governing wine tasting and evaluation, enabling them to apply these skills in professional roles such as sales or customer service within the hospitality, retail, and wholesale sectors. It is also beneficial for wine enthusiasts wishing to deepen their knowledge.

Progression routes

Candidates will be able to continue their journey by taking the WSET Level 3 Award in Wines, available in person or online.
