WSET Level 1 is a one-day course with wine tasting.

The training is a great help for staff starting out in a wine store or hotel-restaurant. WSET 1 ends with a 30-question MCQ exam, and a minimum of 8 hours preparation time is required.

You will receive a study guide to help you prepare.

module 1 . Learn about the basic stages of viticulture and winemaking

  • Name the main parts of a grape and explain what they contain.
  • Name the main stages in the annual grape development cycle and explain what happens during ripening.
  • Name and define the different climates favorable to viticulture and indicate how they influence the characteristics of the grapes.
  • Name the prerequisites and products of alcoholic fermentation.
  • Name and classify in the right order the main stages in the production of still white, red and rosé wines.

Module 2: Learn about the types, styles and characteristics of wines made from the main grape varieties, as well as other examples of wines.

  • Name and define wine types and the characteristics that determine their style.
  • Name the main grape varieties and identify the characteristics and style of the wines made from them.
  • Identify examples of wines made from the main grape varieties and associate them with their grape varieties, types, characteristics and wine styles.
  • Identify other examples of wines and associate them with wine types, characteristics and styles.

module 3. Know the basic principles and practices of wine storage and service

  • Identify and define ideal storage conditions and preservation methods for wine…
  • Identify the recommended serving temperature for the main types and styles of wine.
  • Describe the correct way to open and serve wine.
  • Identify the main interactions between food and wine and recognize the effect they generally have on a wine.

Target audience and prerequisites

  • General public

PREREQUISITES

  • No prior knowledge of wine or tasting.
  • Be of legal age.
  • Be able to read and understand French
  • Anyone can register for the WSET course

Teaching methods

Active and participative teaching methods with course application:

  • Setting the scene
  • Indoor quiz
  • Case studies
  • Training support documents projected in the classroom
  • Access to a digital space dedicated to training

Certification validation

  • 30-question MCQ in 45 minutes
  • 70% of answers must be correct to validate the diploma.

Copies are sent and corrected in London.

Results are sent at least 3 weeks later by e-mail and the diploma by post.

Candidates who fail the exam can retake it at a later session, at an additional cost.

Range

Candidates will be able to respond to their customers’ requests, and advise them on the best way to serve a wine.

WSET 1 certification in wine is suitable for people who are going to
work for the first time in wine sales or service.

Path sequences

Candidates will be able to go on to WSET levels 2 and 3 in wine.
