The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines takes place over 5 days and includes the tasting of wines from around the world.
However, the Butler Academy recommends completing this course with an optional exam preparation day (+€190), specially designed by our experts to increase your chances of success in this challenging certification.
The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines aims to provide you with a comprehensive knowledge of the factors determining the style, quality, and price of the world’s principal still, sparkling, and fortified wines.
It is intended for experienced individuals wishing to gain international certification for their oenological knowledge in order to advance professionally within the wine industry.
Its short format allows it to adapt to those currently in employment or whose schedules do not permit long-term training.
Nevertheless, a minimum of 80 hours of preparation is expected before starting the course. To this end, study materials will be provided upon registration.
The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines concludes with a 2.5-hour exam consisting of theory and tasting papers.
In accordance with France Compétences guidelines, standalone WSET courses are no longer eligible for CPF funding since 2023, with the exception of WSET Level 3 in Wines in French (RS7430).

Module 1. Identifying the principal natural and human factors involved in the production of the world's still wines, in the vineyards and winemaking facilities, and explaining how they affect the style, quality, and price of these wines.

Module 2. Identifying and describing the characteristics of still wines produced in the world's principal wine-growing regions, and explaining how the main natural and human factors—in the vineyards, winemaking facilities, and on a legislative and commercial level—affect the style, quality, and price of these wines.
- Identifying and locating the world’s principal wine-growing regions and describing the style and quality of the still wines produced there.
- Identifying the main factors in the vineyard and winemaking facilities, as well as at the legislative and commercial levels, related to still wine production, and briefly explaining how they affect the style, quality, and price of the world’s principal still wines.
- Focusing on the main grape varieties of the aforementioned regions, applying the knowledge from Objective 1 to explain how factors in the vineyard and winemaking facilities affect the style and quality of the wine.
Module 3. Identifying and describing the characteristics of the world's principal sparkling wines, and explaining how the main natural and human factors—in the vineyards and winemaking facilities, as well as on a legislative and commercial level—affect the style, quality, and price of these wines.

Module 4. Identifying and describing the characteristics of the world's principal fortified wines, and explaining how the main natural and human factors—in the vineyards and winemaking facilities, as well as on a legislative and commercial level—affect the style, quality, and price of these wines.
- Identifying and locating the world’s principal fortified wines and describing the style and quality of these wines.
- Identifying the main factors in the vineyard and winemaking facilities, as well as at the legislative level, related to fortified wine production, and quickly explaining how they affect the style, quality, and price of the world’s principal fortified wines.
Module 5. Demonstrating the ability to inform and advise customers and staff regarding wines.
- Knowing how to recommend wines and explaining the reasons for the choice.
- Explaining how to correctly store and serve wine.
- Identifying the most common wine faults.
- Identifying the main elements to take into consideration when recommending a food and wine pairing.
- Stating the social and health risks associated with excessive wine consumption
Module 6. ANALYTICAL WINE TASTING: Describing with precision the key characteristics of the world's principal still wines, and relying on this description to evaluate their quality and aging potential.

Target Audience and Prerequisites
- Experienced individuals.
PREREQUISITES
- Holding the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines or possessing an equivalent level of knowledge optional but recommended
- Being of legal age (18+).
Training methods
Active and participative pedagogy with practical course application:

CERTIFICATION VALIDATION
- Candidates must achieve a minimum score of 55% for each examination.
- Candidates are allowed 2 hours 30 minutes for the following two examinations:
For the Unit 1 Theory Examination (Modules 1 to 5) 2 hours:
- Part 1: A 50-question multiple-choice exam (MCQ) designed to assess knowledge and understanding of the entirety of Unit 1.
- Part 2:A questionnaire requiring short written answers. This part consists of four questions and evaluates the application of knowledge across the unit.
For the Unit 2 Tasting Examination (Module 6) 30 minutes:
The tasting examination assesses Unit 2 and consists of a blind tasting of two wines. This test evaluates the candidates’ ability to accurately describe a wine and draw conclusions based on these observations.
To pass the tasting examination, candidates must obtain a minimum score of 55%.
Results
- Exam papers are sent to and graded in London.
- Results and your diploma are sent at least 8 weeks later via digital means.
Candidates must obtain a minimum score of 55% in each examination.
A candidate who fails the examination has the possibility, within two years following their training, to retake the relevant examination during a subsequent session, with an additional cost for registration.

SCOPE
Successful candidates will be able to describe the characteristics of the world’s principal wines and discuss the key factors affecting style, quality, and price. They will thus be able to advise the management of various types of establishments, answer customers’ questions knowledgeably, and make informed wine selections for various situations.
This qualification will facilitate the professional evaluation of wines in terms of style, quality, and price. It offers an in-depth knowledge of these products, a necessary complement to professional skills, particularly for selecting wines for the Horeca (CHR) and retail sectors.
At the end of this training, trainees will have increased confidence in this area of expertise, allowing for greater ease in their professional interactions and commercial approach.
Progression Routes
Candidates will be able to continue and complete their journey by following the WSET Spirits training courses offered by the Butler Academy, or by pursuing Level 4 with the WSET in London.
