The hospitality industry offers a wide range of career opportunities for trainees. In fact, the restaurant and accommodation market is doing well in the West Indies. Tourism in the French overseas territories is one of the mainstays of the local economy. Improved air and cruise ship services mean that we can welcome a wider range of customers, mainly from mainland France, but also from the West Indies and the USA. While the Sud Grande-Terre, Deshaies and Les Saintes in Guadeloupe and the Espace Sud in Martinique are the main tourist hotspots, the other communes provide access to a wide range of tourist activities. Accommodation and catering, the two mainstays of tourism, account for over 4% of salaried employment in Martinique and Guadeloupe. Although tourist accommodation generates higher added value than the restaurant sector, the latter has a higher margin rate in the West Indies.
